The other day, I goofed and forgot my keys on the way home, so Alex and I killed some time on the green in front of his day care provider's apartment while we waited for Mike to rescue us. We met a 9 year old boy and a 6 year old girl playing outside before dinner. I chatted with them, and the conversation turned to running races, so I gamely counted out second while they wore themselves out running. At one point, the little boy incorrectly remarked that his 26 seconds was a quarter of a minute. Rather than just let it go, I called him on it, and the following conversation ensued:
Me: Now wait a minute, that's not right, let's think about it. How many second in a minute?
Boy: 60
Me: Good! So a quarter is a half of a half, right?
Boy: Right.
Me: So what is half of a minute?
Boy: 30 seconds.
Me: Exactly right! And what's half of that?
Boy: 15.
me: You got it! So what is a quarter of a minute?
Boy: 15 seconds!
Girl: She sounds like a teacher...
Boy: But she doesn't yell like a teacher.
Me: No, sweetie, I'm just a mommy.
and so you are!
