Potty Progress

This is another “he’ll hate me when he is older” post, but what can you do? This is what’s going on in Alex’s life.

PottyTime Alex is definitely making progress in using the toilet. He is pretty consistently peeing in the potty before his bath in the evenings. This morning, he actually told us that he had to poop, and we sat together on the potty for a while, he and I. Then he asked for the big potty, so I got up and put his special seat on it, and got him settled. I had to run to work at that point, but Mike took over. Alex asked for something to read (!) and some privacy (!) and about 2 minutes later, he summoned Daddy with his cries of “I did it!” And he had. Woo hoo! I received a triumphant phone call on my cell phone telling me so. When I got home, Mike had also worked on the signs for such things with Alex, because Alex is now consistently signing “toilet” and “poop.”

On a related note, our little boy is now wearing pull ups instead of diapers at least some of the time. He has figured out how to pull them up and down, which helps. I was shopping last weekend at Sam’s Club and wanted to pick up some more pull-ups. Nowadays they come in two basic styles — “feel and learn,” where you can feel the wetness, and “magic,” where the picture on the front appears or disappers when you wet. I prefer the feel and learns, so, well, he feels and learns.

Usually, we get the Huggies Feel and Learns, for no other reason than they have Buzz Lightyear on them. Each brand has its own licensed characters, one aimed at boys and blue, one aimed at girls and pink. At Sam’s, they only had the Huggies magic ones, but they did have the Pampers Feel and Learns. The Pampers character choices are SpiderMan and Dora the Explorer. Well, Alex has never even seen SpiderMan, but he loves Dora. I asked, do you want SpiderMan? And he said emphatically, “No! Dora!” I thought about it for a few seconds and decided, what the heck? He’s secure in his masculinity, and so am I. So, Dora it is!

This morning, he rejected Buzz completely and asked me to open the closet, where he pointed to the Dora pull ups box and said “I want Dora.” His inaugural pair. Mike says, hey she’s a cute chick, if he wants her by his crotch, so be it!
