And what a boy!

Okay, so this is the first entry Nate will hate me for when he is old enough to read this. Just fair warning. Get used to your parents embarassing you, kid.

There is an episode of The Simpsons where they flash back to Homer finding out that Bart is a boy. The dcotor says “It’s a boy!” and Homer exclaims “and what a boy!” to which the doctor corrects “that’s the umbilical cord, Mr. Simpson.”

When Nate was born, I asked that the doc allow Mike to take the first peek and announce his sex. The nurses warned that sometimes it is hard to tell at first glance, but when it came down to it, before Mike could even tell me he was a boy, the nurses were joking that there would be no doubt. Nate came out of me butt-first, and it was quite obvious what that package between his legs was (his whole body wasn’t even out of the incision before they had Mike peek around the curtain to tell).

Ever since that moment, Homer’s “and what a boy!” is often stuck in my head. Particularly given Nate’s prodigious grunting, snorting, farting, and burping. Very boy-like. How such a little body can make such big sounds is one of the great mysteries of the universe. My conversations with Nate are simple:

Nate: Pppbbbbbbttthppppttt! Snort snort!
Mommy: “And what a boy!” Let’s change that diaper, shall we?

Yes, he is definitely going to hate me for this one.
