Peanut Butter

This past weekend, Alex had his first peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We have been avoiding all nuts, aiming to not let Alex have them until he hit three years old. The latest and greatest medical advice is to avoid peanut butter until a child is at least two, and three or four is even better, to help ward off possible deathly nut allergies.

Alex, apparantly, had other ideas. While Mike and I enjoyed our anniversary dinner, he was asked to choose between a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or chicken nuggets for dinner, and he chose the PB&J. The adults involved felt awful afterwards when they realized we hadn’t yet introduced peanut butter, but he didn’t have any reaction, so all’s well that ends well.

Oh, and did I mention he loved it? He apparantly scarfed down the aforementioned sandwich, although he often balks at sandwiches and would rather eat the innards without the bread.

So this morning, I asked Alex what he wanted for breakfast, and he answered “Peanut Butter!” I started to say no, then realized “what the heck?” He’s not allergic, and he likes it, and it’s a good source of protein, and I am being silly. Peanut butter on a bagel it is!
