New School

Alex and Nate started at their new day care today. Last night as Mike was tucking Alex into bed, Alex surprised Mike by saying “tomorrow I see my new friends!” And on the way to the school, I even got video of him happily chattering about the new school.

But as I feared, the execution was a bit more difficult than the concept had been. Not for Nate — as I expected, he went right to the new provider with no problem, and immediately showed off his “I am almost crawling!” skill of getting up on his hands and knees. But for poor Alex, it was rough. Alex was clingy when we joined the group sitting at the table for snack time. When we left, we could see Alex through the glass crying and reaching out toward us yelling “Mommy!” He was being hugged and loved on by the director and the teachers, and I am confident he is in good hands, but it was still heartwrenching. Mike and I were both in tears when we left.

This too shall pass. I am confident Alex will be just fine for most of the day, and that drop offs will be a breeze by next week. But this week — well, it proves that one has to have a really strong stomach and high pain tolerance to be a parent.
