Doctor Day
Posted by Dineen on June 1st, 2006 filed in NateNate was to the docs twice today, poor thing. In the morning he had to go to the hospital for an ultrasound of his hips and butt just to make sure everything is OK — breech babies have a greater tendency to have hip dysplasia and he has deep dimples on his butt (sacral dimples) that make me feel awful for sometimes skipping my prenatal vitamins (although the link I found for this entry says “no known cause” for them, so I need to stop the self-flagelation!). I had to back out last minute and make Mike do it by himself because work was so crazy, which caused a bit of a wacky morning shuffle, but my boys handled it with aplomb. Word is he charmed everyone in sight, and the ultrasound tech declared him “perfect” as well as charming, so we are glad to have that precaution out of the way.
Unfortunately, the day care called me at 3:30 to tell me that Nate’s eyes were crusted shut when he woke up from his nap. So I called the pediatrician, who called in a prescription for drops assuming pink eye. Once we got home, Mike and I looked at the eye and thought since it was only in one eye and not actually red at all, maybe it was a blocked tear duct rather than contageous pink eye. We decided to take him to the after-hours pediatrician to get checked out hoping to clear him to go back to day care Friday since I have a ton of work to do tomorrow. No dice. The doctor said yes, the eye probably started as blocked tear duct but those generally turn bacterial so no day care until after 24 hours of meds. I guess I should have just stuck with the called-in prescription and saved ourselves the extra large after hours co-pay. The bright side was learning that Nate’s weight was up to 16.2 ounces (up almost a pound from just a week ago!), and it was frankly fun to see the medical staff ooh and aah over Nate’s mobility and activeness! And, of course, we had some certainty about the eye, which is better than not knowing. But tomorrow with our work schedules and no day care should be veeeery interesting!
