Poopapalooza!
Posted by Dineen on July 25th, 2006 filed in Alex, MilestonesSomething clicked for Alex this weekend, and suddenly, he is very close to potty trained. In fact, this weekend will forever be known in our household as poopapalooza. Before now, as I mentioned, he would pee on the potty if pushed, but would not initiate it, and even when he was otherwise good with pee, poop was always a mess and never in the toilet. After Monday’s declaration that he was ready for big boy underwear, we went the entire week in big boy underwear. He had about one accident a day, in the pee department, which was a big improvement. He pooped only twice the whole week (in his undies both times, unfortunately) as opposed to his normal two-times-a-day, so I was a bit concerned.
But on Saturday, he let it rip. Every time he sat on the toilet, he racked up four stickers — 1 for number 1, one for staying dry between trips, and 2 for number 2! He ended up earning not one, but TWO brand new cars on Saturday. He started to have one poop accident, but he caught himself and got most of it in the potty, a particularly impressive feat when you consider he was waking from a car seat nap in which he had stayed dry, and we had just arrived at a house we had never visited before for a party. On Sunday, he started to have one pee accident but again caught it himself and got daddy to take him to the potty. He did well at a public bathroom, too. And he also decided he no longer needed his seat insert and was perfectly content to climb onto the regular potty seat (and thus we pitched the insert, which had taken on a permanent icky smell, anyway).
On Monday, he got through the whole day without any accidents at all. Ditto today. He has stopped asking for stickers.
He is still wearing a diaper to bed at the moment, though he doesn’t really like to. He does wake up pretty soaked, though, so I have told him he can focus on the daytime for now and we will work on the night time at the end of the week. I have started talking to him about giving up his bed time cup of water, and I think by Friday we both will be ready to give overnight a shot (on my end, that means preparing the several layers of waterproof pads and replacement sheets).
The mythical “they” tell me it all just clicks one day when they are ready. I guess they are right!
