Conversations with Alex Today

Just a small sampling of where Alex’s mind is at today:

As he and Daddy are getting out of the shower after an afternoon of messy work fixing the sprinklers:
Alex: We did a lot a lot a lot today, didn’t we Daddy?
Daddy: yes we did.
Alex: I am a big helper.
Daddy: You certainly are.
Alex: When I grow up I am going to be a Daddy like you.
Daddy: I hope so! But not too soon.
Alex: What would be too soon?
Daddy: Well, I know I wasn’t ready to be a Daddy until I was thirty three.
Alex: What is thirty three?
Daddy: That’s ten plus ten plus ten plus three.
Alex: That’s a lot.
Daddy: Yes. You have 29 years to go.

In the car on the way to Home Depot:
Alex: Mommy, how are people made?
Mommy: What do you mean, Alex?
Alex: How are people MADE?
Mommy: Pretend people, like dolls?
Alex (clearly annoyed): No, How are REAL people made?
Mommy: They grow in mommies’ tummies, just like you did, and baby Nate did.
Alex: Oh, Ok.

Later in the same car ride:
Alex: When I grow up, I want to be a Daddy, OK Mommy?
Mommy: That would be wonderful, Alex.
Alex: And I want to marry you Mommy, so you can be the Mommy, OK Mommy?
Mommy: But Alex, I am already married. I am married to Daddy.
Alex: Why, Mommy?
Mommy: Because I love Daddy and we wanted to be married and make a family. And I love you too, very much, but it is a different kind of love. But I will always be your Mommy, even when you are a Daddy with kids of your own.
Alex: Ok, Mommy. I love you.

Later, at home:
Mommy: Alex, I need you to switch over the laundry.
Alex: MOM. *sigh* [And notice I become Mom, not Mommy, when he is annoyed]. Mom, that is not a nice way to ask. You didn’t say please.
Mommy: You’re right, I didn’t say please. We say please in this house, don’t we?
Alex: And outside of this house too. So say please, Mom.
Mommy: Please go switch the laundry, Alex.
Alex: Yes Mommy, thank you for asking nicely.
