Sound it out

Ever since Owl day, I have been trying to be more conscious of finding teachable moments to work on words and sounds with Alex. Today we went food shopping and at the cart return area, Alex asked me “Mommy, how do you know this is where the cart goes?” I replied “well, there is a sign there that says ‘Please return carts here.’ Can you figure out which word on the sign is ‘cart’?” And he most certainly did it — pointed right at it. “How do you know that is ‘cart’?” He replied “/c/, /c/, /c/, cart starts with C and that is the C word. Cart!”

At bed time, he found some words while we were reading Thomas the Tank Engine, and we also made some words with the letter train. He sounded out “fun” “car” and, of course, recognized “Alex” and “Nate.” Need to get to the library to find some new reader books. I am pretty sure he could do the cat-sat-hat-rat stuff.
