Real moms…

A few months ago I was tagged with the Real Moms meme, and finally got around to answering it. But today I realized I have a better answer (sans pictures, for soon-to-be-obvious reasons!).

It took me until I had my second kid to become a true Mom. And by that I mean one who is competent with a rectal thermometer. Alex luckily wasn’t very sick as a baby, and I got along with the forehead sweep thermometer. But I have finally had to admit that that one doesn’t work all that well. Rather than invest in an ear thermometer that doesn’t work very well, last time my mom was here I had her show me how to do the rectal thermometer, and it’s frankly just better. Flat out the most accurate way to get a temp.

Unfortunately, I have had to use it the past several days. Alex had what turned out to be strep last week, and was home Wednesday, Thursday, Friday (I had it too — we are both taking Amoxicillian). Nate had a fever on Thursday, but I didn’t take him in because he had no other symptoms the rest of the weekend. Then he got sent home with a fever yesterday. 102.5. This morning we went to the doctor, and it turns out he has an ear infection. One more bottle of antibiotics in the fridge.

And with that, I hope they are both better for a while! Yes, I am now competent with the thermometer, but I would still rather not have to use it.
