The Big Word of the Day
Posted by Dineen on December 12th, 2007 filed in Alex, Literary AllusionsToday’s big word of the day was anthropomorhic. For one of his bed time stories, Alex and I read one of the library books he picked out last week — the untimely but very cute John Pig’s Halloween by Jan Waldron
. The story is told in rhyming couplets, and has just fabulous illustrations of by David McPhail
Pig, who stayed home from trick or treating because he was scared, getting caught up in the spirit anyway when a witch drops in and brings all or friends to the party. The big thing is that the witch teaches John Pig to cook pies and other treats, and Alex turned to me and said, in his you’ve got to be kidding me! voice, “Pigs can’t cook!”
And so I taught him the word anthropomorphic. We talked about giving animals human characteristics, and the many stories we have read that have anthropomorphic pigs. And it’s so cute to hear him try to say it. Anthropomorphic. I am just glad that when I looked it up just now to put in that Wikipedia link, I used the right word!
