Graduation Weekend

Hooray!

Alex graduated from his VPK program yesterday! He was up early and bouncing off the walls with excitement. He couldn’t wait to try on his cap and gown. When I pulled out his clothes (a red button shirt and button pants) he balked for only a second and then quickly corrected himself, saying “I like button shirts when it is a day for pictures and graduation is a day for pictures.” We arrived half an hour early to secure the seat in the front row, near the end where I knew Alex would be sitting.

Alex held the American flag while the kids recited the Pledge, and then they sang three songs (including the Florida Alphabet Song, which I totally fell in love with, and want to teach to Nate, too!). Alex introduced the last song, with the line “this is a song we like to sing about a bunny named Foo Foo.” After the show, the kids each went up to receive their diploma from their lead teacher, Ms. Latoya. After she distributed them, she pointed out that the rolls of paper had been just for show, and the real diplomas were at the front desk for collection. The piece of paper reads:”The Degree Student of Rhymes is Hereby Awarded to Alexander Wasylik who has satisfactorily completed our course of instruction and no continues on a lifetime of learning.” I think that is so sweet and perfect for a pre-k graduation! After a brief reception on the playground, we went out for breakfast to celebrate, and Alex proceeded to brag about his big morning at swim class.

Today, we had another graduation of sorts: Both boys completed their swim class levels and were given certificates from the teacher. Nate can now kick and dig to the wall, under water, for about a foot, and Alex can now do both an Airplane Float (what we used to call the Deadman’s float!) and float on his back with his face out of the water.
