Singing Happy Birthday

Has my little baby boy really reached the ripe old age of five? FIVE? Five happens to be the year that Alex’s birthday came back around to be on the day he was born, a Wednesday.

He had a fun day at school — it happened to be field trip day, so he went to see Kung Fu Panda with his friends, and then shared dinosaur cupcakes with them while they sang happy birthday to him. He was thrilled with the way he spent his day.

I was so busy making cupcakes for school last night, I forgot to make a cake for our quiet celebration at home. Then I got home late to boot. So we ended up going out for Alex’s dinner celebration. We let Alex pick the restaurant and he picked….Taco Bell. Don’t you want to go someplace else, Alex? Maybe Olive Garden? Nope, he insisted, he wanted Taco Bell. So, off we went to the Bell! The boys enjoyed tacos and Mexi-melts for dinner. Then we headed to Publix and let Alex pick out his cake — he chose black forest because he liked that there was a cherry for everyone on top. We went home and sang, and he opened the lovely presents and cards he had received in the mail from Aunt Keri and Uncle Tim, the special card from cousin Sean and Alissa, and the wonderful package from his Godparents.

Alex is five years old. He is a whiz on his Razor scooter, and is getting better every day at his bicycle. He can write his name, can read (even if he doesn’t think he can) and can do simple addition and subtraction and is starting to understand fractions. He can mostly color within the lines, when he wants to. His favorite color, still, is purple (and he adores his purple water shoes!). He adores his family, most particularly his little brother. He has a fantastic vocabulary and imagination. And he is very much looking forward to starting kindergarten, even if he is not 100% sure what that means.
