In the Yellow

Alex’s teacher sends home every day a notebook containing a parent communication log and a the behavior calendar. At the end of the school day, the kids are required to color in that day’s square with their behavior for the day. Star = superstar! Green = Great! Yellow = O.K. and Red = Uh Oh. There is a space for a parent to initial his square every day.

During the first partial week of school, Alex got greens every day — and got a cool eraser as a prize at the end of the week for staying in the green. This week started out in the green, but yesterday Alex got his first yellow. After some prodding, he explained that he got in trouble for talking and lifting his head up during nap time and not listening. We had a long talk about making good choices, and I hoped it sunk in.

But today, another yellow. Still issues with listening and talking when he is not supposed to. We once again had a talk about making good choices. Today we added a talk about how cool it would be to end the week with greens again and get back on track. He then surprised me by saying “Mommy, I want to be superstar!” I told him it was good to aim high, and he should do the best he can to make himself proud. I asked him how he thought he could earn that, and his explanation was pretty good. I will send the teacher a note about his goal, in hopes that he can be nudged to attain it!
