Our EngagementMike: By the time we had been dating for two years, I knew I was done for. The only question that remained was how and when to propose. Since I wanted to make it a surprise, I pretty much kept everyone in the dark. Both our families converged at our house for Thanksgiving '98, and expectations were high. Christmas came, with higher expectations, and still no ring. After two major family holidays and no sign of committment on my part, Dineen and I had a Very Serious Talk (insert your own air quotes). Even though I had already (secretly) selected and put a deposit on the ring, I convinced her that it would be at least six months to a year before I would be ready to make that big step. Of course, this was merely diabolical maneuvering on my part. In fact, I had already arranged to pick up the ring that following week. I also snagged second row seats to the orchestra for that Friday evening. Even thought she knew we were going to the symphony, she had no idea what was to come next . . . . . |
